John and Carol Holland start Metro Mold & Design (MMD) in the basement of their Minnetonka, MN home and begin manufacturing molds. They finance the business with a $5,000 loan from Robert and Luella Holland (John’s parents), and then secure a $7,500 bank loan. |

1973 |
John and Carol make MMD their full-time business, and anticipate the company growing to three employees. |

1977 |
John and Carol move MMD to the garage of their new home in Otsego, MN. |

1979 |
MMD moves to an old pole barn on John and Carol’s property which their entire family helped to refurbish. |

1981 |
John and Carol purchase land in Rogers, MN to build a manufacturing facility for future growth. Interest rates are around 18%. |

1983 |
Construction finishes on a new building which includes an 80’ x 80’ manufacturing facility and 20’ x 40’ office space. |

1985 |
With seven employees, MMD moves into the new building using half the space and renting the other half to another business. |

1990 |
MMD expands into the other half of the building, and anticipates growing to 20 employees. |

1996 |
The company continues to grow and purchases adjacent land for building expansion. |

Tim Holland (John and Carol’s son) who began working at MMD as a child begins to assume leadership of MMD. |

1997 |
The Rogers, MN facility undergoes a 9,600 sq. ft. addition and remodeling, bringing the building to 16,800 total sq. ft. |

Tim Holland begins to purchase MMD from his parents. |

2001 |
Tim and Tom Holland (Tim’s brother) form a custom plastic injection molding business named Critical To Function (CTF). |

2004 |
MMD launches ExpressParts™, its rapid injection molding and prototype service. |

2005 |
MMD purchases CTF, making Tom Holland a MMD shareholder and adding 15,400 sq. ft. of manufacturing space. |

2006 |
MMD purchases the assets of Accutech Mold and Engineering, a 5,000 sq. ft. mold manufacturing facility in Little Falls, MN. |

2006 |
MMD acquires ICM Plastics in Rogers, MN, adding thermoset plastic molding and extrusion blow molding capabilities, and bringing manufacturing space to 220,000 total sq. ft. |

2009 |
MMD pulls through one of the biggest economic downturns in U.S. history, emerging as a stronger and more focused company. |
